All treatments have risks

With IVF and ICSI-treatment we can help women and couples to obtain pregnancy, but with any kind of treatment comes a small risk, which we will do everything we can to prevent.

OHSS (Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndronme)

In IVF and ICSI-treatment you are treated with hormones, that stimulates the ovaries to produce more follicles than normally. The risk of hyper stimulation (OHSS) occurs if more than 20 follicles are produced in a treatment. OHSS is rarely seen at a fewer number of follicles. We try to avoid this complication by stimulating individually and carefully. Thus, some women respond unexpectedly and develop  more follicles than expected.

Symptoms of OHSS can be bloated stomach, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, tendency of feeling bloated or having difficulty urinating. The symptoms occur because of fluid retention in the abdomen. In most cases, OHSS will kick in once you are pregnant. If you suspect OHSS, you must contact the clinic or the emergency room.

If all control appointments are kept during the treatment, the risk of OHSS constitutes 2%.

Ectopic pregnancy

The embryo is transferred to the uterine cavity, but in some cases the embryo wanders to the tube.

At scans after fertility treatment, an ectopic pregnancy will be discovered and treated at an early stage.

If an ectopic pregnancy is suspected, and pain and/or bleeding occurs, you must contact the clinic, your GP or the emergency room.

Twin pregnancy

In fertility treatment there is an increased incidence of twin pregnancies, which are associated with more complications and risks than singleton pregnancies, and often twins are delivered prematurely.

We recommend, that only one embryo is transferred, unless there is a medical reason for transferring two embryos.

Spontaneous abortion

10-15% of all pregnancies result in spontaneous abortion. In IVF- and ICSI-treatment the risk of spontaneous abortion is 15-30%, probably because of a higher average age in the women treated.

Bleeding after oocyte retireval

A small vaginal bleeding almost always occurs after oocyte retrieval. The bleeding should not be more than a heavy menstrual bleeding. The bleeding comes from the needle punctures in top of the vagina and does not affect your chances of getting pregnant.

Abdominal inflammation

Even though the oocyte retrieval is done as sterile as possible, an abdominal inflammation can occur around the ovaries. The symptoms are pain and fever. Abdominal inflammation is a very rare complication and is treated with antibiotics. You are always welcome to contact the clinic, your GP or the emergency room, if you have any doubts.
