All treatments have risks
With IVF and ICSI-treatment we can help women and couples to obtain pregnancy, but with any kind of treatment comes a small risk, which we will do everything we can to prevent.
OHSS (Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndronme)
In IVF and ICSI-treatment you are treated with hormones, that stimulates the ovaries to produce more follicles than normally. The risk of hyper stimulation (OHSS) occurs if more than 20 follicles are produced in a treatment. OHSS is rarely seen at a fewer number of follicles. We try to avoid this complication by stimulating individually and carefully. Thus, some women respond unexpectedly and develop more follicles than expected.
Symptoms of OHSS can be bloated stomach, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, tendency of feeling bloated or having difficulty urinating. The symptoms occur because of fluid retention in the abdomen. In most cases, OHSS will kick in once you are pregnant. If you suspect OHSS, you must contact the clinic or the emergency room.
If all control appointments are kept during the treatment, the risk of OHSS constitutes 2%.
Ectopic pregnancy
The embryo is transferred to the uterine cavity, but in some cases the embryo wanders to the tube.
At scans after fertility treatment, an ectopic pregnancy will be discovered and treated at an early stage.
If an ectopic pregnancy is suspected, and pain and/or bleeding occurs, you must contact the clinic, your GP or the emergency room.
